The Pittsburgh Panther tennis team swept three opponents this week and witnessed a record-breaking performance in the process.
Fran Davis (Dallas, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) became Pittsburgh's all-time leader in combined singles and doubles victories while winning both her singles and doubles matches in the Panthers' 6-3 victory against crosstown-rival Duquesne April 7. Davis' 121 career wins eclipsed former Panther Julie LoPrinzi's 116 career-victories mark, which she achieved in 1993. Davis' success this season has also placed her at the top of Pittsburgh's career doubles wins with 68 and second in career singles wins with 53.
Pittsburgh also shut out Carnegie Mellon, 9-0, April 9 and captured its first-ever victory against league-rival Georgetown, 5-2, April 11.
The Panthers put up some outstanding performances, including four singles players and two doubles teams that went undefeated in the past three contests. The undefeated singles players were Davis, Erin Shalbrack (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin), Amanda Hoffman (West Palm Beach, Fla./Forest Hill) and Alison Bucher (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township). In doubles action, the team of Davis and Shalbrack won all three of its contests, and the team of Hoffman and Bucher won each of its bouts against CMU and Georgetown.
The Panthers continue Big East action April 23-26 at the conference championship at Miami in Coral Gables, Fla.
