Panthers Conquer Detroit Mercy

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Panthers women's tennis team pulled out a 5-4 victory over visiting Detroit- Mercy March 28 at Washington Landing and increased their record to 10-6 overall.
In singles competition, the Panthers dropped matches in the first, second and third spots before sophomore Dana Jafarian (Bryn Mawr, Pa/Harriton) defeated Melissa Shymko, 6-0, 6-1, in the fourth-seed match. Freshman Katie Warden (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) added a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Renee Kuzava at the fifth-seed, while junior Alison Bucher (Lancaster, Pa/Manheim Township) defeated Khadisha Saunders, 6-4, 6-0, in the sixth spot.
In doubles competition, the duo of Sarah Austin (Salisbury, Md/James M. Bennett) and Bucher combined for an 8-2 win over Erika Mainhart and Shymko in the second spot, while in the third spot, Jafarian and Warden overcame a 3-0 deficit to defeat Khadisha Saunders and Renee Kuzava, 9-8 (3). The team of Erin Shalbrack (Maple Glen, Pa/Upper Dublin) and Lindsay Carlson (Gambrills, Md/Arundel) fell, 8-1, to Maria Pandele and Vicki Parker in the first-seed match.
The Panthers will return to action on Wednesday, March 31 when they host Youngstown State at 3 p.m.
