Panthers Defeat Duquesne 8-1, Lose Two Straight

PITTSBURGH - The Panther women's tennis team dropped two of three contests last week. They defeated crosstown-rival Duquesne, 8-1, April 7 and suffered 8-1 losses to visiting Maryland- Baltimore County April 8 and host Seton Hall April 10. Pittsburgh's second Big East match of the weekend, which was scheduled for Sunday, April 11 at Villanova was canceled due to inclement weather.
Against Duquesne, Erin Shalbrack (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) and Lindsay Carlson (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) opened doubles competition defeating Kristin Kondrath and Monica Furniss, 8-2, in the first-seed match. Alison Bucher (Lancaster, Pa./ Manhiem Township) and Sarah Austin (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) beat Marnie Jasinski and Carrie Nygard, 8-2, in the second spot and Dana Jafarian (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) and Katie Warden (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) continued their hot streak winning, 8-3, against Kori Nicol and Jessie Marotta in the third spot.
In singles competition, Duquesne's Kondrath defeated Austin, 6-4, 6-0, in the first spot. Shalbrack took a convincing, 6-0, 6-0, decision over Jasinski and Carlson beat Kori Nicol, 6-3, 6-4 in the second and third spots, respectively. Jafarian took a 6-1, 6-0 win over Furniss in the fourth spot, while Warden defeated Nygard, 6-2, 6-2 in the fifth spot. Bucher finished the match for Pittsburgh taking a 6-4, 6-2 decision against Jessica Fricke.
Shalbrack tallied her 108 and 109 career victories against Duquesne and only trails Julie LoPrinzi by eight victories for second in Panther history in combined career singles and doubles wins. Fran Davis set the record at 124 wins when she finished her Panther career last season.
Against Maryland-Baltimore County, the Panthers' lone win came with Bucher's 6-1, 2-6, 7-6(6) victory against Danielle Martinez. Bucher now leads the Panthers in singles wins with 17.
Jafarian and Warden were the lone bright spot in the Panther's loss to Seton Hall, winning a competitive, 9-8(7) decision against Jasmine Wolcott and Danielle Houle. Jafarian and Warden lead Pittsburgh with 17 doubles victories.
The Panther's record stands at 12-9 and they will return to action Tuesday, April 13 when they play host Carnegie Mellon.
