Women's Tennis Concludes Regular Season

PITTSBURGH - The Panther women's tennis team concluded the regular season this past week dropping two of three contests. They defeated Carnegie Mellon, 7-2, April 13 and suffered 4-0 losses against Georgetown and West Virginia on April 18. Pittsburgh finished the season with an overall record of 13-10.
Against Carnegie Mellon, Erin Shalbrack (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) and Lindsay Carlson (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) lost a competitive match to Keri Mills and Elisabeth Brown, 9- 8(6) in the first doubles spot. In the second spot, Alison Bucher (Lancaster, Pa./Manhiem Township) and Sarah Austin (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) dominated in an 8-0 victory over Jessica Chiu and Julie Balch. Dana Jafarian (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) and Katie Warden (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) concluded doubles competition with an 8-2 win over Kelly Chanopas and Jill Palermo.
In singles competition, Austin lost a tight match to Mills, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the first-seed match. Shalbrack got her 110th career win with a 6-2,6-2 victory over Brown in the second slot. In the third singles slot, Carlson easily defeated Palermo, 6-0, 6-0. In the fourth and fifth spots respectively, Jafarian took a 6-1, 6-0 decision against Balch and Warden defeated Chanopas, 6-2, 6-3. Bucher finished out the match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Fani Pavlova in the sixth spot.
The Panthers will finish the 1998-99 season, April 22-25, in Miami at the Big East Championships.
