The Panthers won their third consecutive match March 31, defeating visiting Youngstown State, 6-3, and increased their record to 11-6 overall.
In doubles competition, Erin Shalbrack (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) and Lindsay Carlson (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) lost, 8-2, to Abby Vens and Jennifer Vodhanel in the first-seed match. In the second spot, Sarah Austin (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) and Alison Bucher (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) took an, 8-1, decision over Marci Russ and Shanna Young, while the duo of Dana Jafarian (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) and Katie Warden (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) beat Mary Hall and Jane Price, 8-5, in the third spot. Jafarian and Warden have won 10 of their last 11 doubles matches.
In singles competition, Austin lost a 6-1, 6-4 decision in the first-seed match, while Shalbrack won a 6-1, 6-3 match over Russ at the second-seed match. Carlson added another victory for the Panthers with her 6-2, 6-1 victory over Hall in the number-three spot. In the fourth spot, Jafarian secured the match victory for Pittsburgh with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Vodhanel. Young captured a tough match against Pittsburgh's Warden, 6-1, 1-6, 7-6(3), in the fifth spot, and Bucher rounded out singles competition with a convincing 6-0, 6-0, victory over Price.
Pittsburgh will finish their five match homestand next week when they host crosstown-rival Duquesne on Wednesday, April 7 and Maryland-Baltimore County on Thursday, April 8.
