Women's Tennis Loses a Heartbreaker to Akron

The Pittsburgh Panther women's tennis team lost a close match to visiting Akron, 5-4, Feb. 26 at Parkway Indoor Tennis. Akron extended their winning streak to seven, while the Panthers record fell to 6-3 overall.
In doubles competition, the first seed duo of freshman Sarah Austin (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) and senior Erin Shalbrack (Maple Glenn, Pa./Upper Dublin) defeated Donna Peters and Becky Schrager, 8-4. Sophomore Dana Jafarian (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) and freshman Katie Warden (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) won an exciting match over Lauren Kloner and Karyn Ebelberger, 9-8(6) in the third doubles slot, while sophomore Lindsay Carlson (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) and junior Alison Bucher (Lancaster, Pa/Manheim Township) lost to Arianna Rojas and Miren Sorondo, 8-4 in the number-two doubles slot.
In singles competition, Austin won a close, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, decision over Arianna Rojas in the first seed match, while Shalbrack edged Miren Sorondo, 6-2, 7-5, in the second seed matchup. The Panthers lost close matches in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth spots that ultimately decided the match in Akron's favor.
The Panthers will return to action when they travel to Glendale, Ariz. to compete in tournament action March 8-10.
