Women's Tennis Splits Weekend Matches

The University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team split a pair of matches this past weekend, shutting out Mercyhurst, 9-0, and falling to Marshall, 9-0.
In the Charles Cost Center Friday, Feb. 20, Lindsay Carlson and Alison Bucher routed their opponents, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 2 and 6 singles spots, respectively. Competing as Pittsburgh's No. 1 singles seed, Dana Jafarian (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) defeated Lauren Diulus, 6-3, 6-2.
The team of Fran Davis (Dallas, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) and Erin Shalbrack (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) captured an 8-3 victory at the No. 1 doubles slot. Amanda Hoffman (West Palm Beach, Fla./Forest Hill) and Jennifer Bible (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) were also impressive, allowing their opponents to win only one game when they picked up an 8-1 win as the Panthers' No. 3 doubles team.
At Marshall Sunday, Feb. 22, Hoffman led the way for the Panthers, winning seven games in her match against Molly Harris at the No. 5 singles seed. Despite her effort, however, Hoffman came up short, 6-2, 7-5.
At the No. 1 singles seed, Jafarian captured two games of her first set against Sheela Cabiling, but was shut out in the second set for a 6-2, 6-0 defeat.Davis and Shalbrack each won two games in singles matches, but fell 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles play, the teams of Davis and Shalbrack, and Bible and Natalie D'Amora (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) lost, 8-2, at the No. 1 and 3 seeds, respectively.
Pittsburgh will open Big East Conference play against Providence in Carmel Valley, Calif., during spring break. They will also face San Francisco, Dominican College and the California-Sacramento in road contests during the break. The team returns home to face Youngstown State March 12 at 3 p.m. in the Cost Center.
