Wrestling Dumps Ohio State, 22-9

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Panther wrestling team, currently ranked 25th by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, extended their record to 4-1-1 overall after defeating Ohio State, 22-9, on Jan. 16.
The Panthers claimed the victory by winning seven of 10 bouts. Leading the way for Pittsburgh was senior Chad Jesko (Dunbar, Pa./Connellsville). Jesko recorded his fifth major decision victory of the season at 149 pounds over Ohio State's Jeff Bucher with a score of 10- 0. Nationally ranked fifth at 174 pounds, sophomore Nick Mengerink (Upper Sandusky, Ohio/Carey) moved up to wrestle at 184 pounds and won his bout over Nick Preston, 3-1, while sophomore Shawn Amistade (Washington, Pa./Trinity) extended his undefeated dual record to 6-0 with a 6-2 decision over the Buckeyes' 17th-ranked Robert Sessley.
True freshman Dan Stine (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) claimed his 24th victory of the season with a 8-3 decision over Brad Todd at 197 pounds. Freshman Chris DiGuiseppe (Ivylnad, Pa./Council Rock) won at 141 pounds, 5-3, while juniors Mike Ziska (N. Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) and Matt Mueller (North Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) won the 157-pound and heavyweight classes with scores of 4-2 and 8-1, respectively.
The Panthers return to the mat Wednesday, Jan. 20 when they visit Slippery Rock and Gannon. Pittsburgh will then host Cleveland State on Friday, Jan. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House.
EWL Honors: Freshman Dan Stine was chosen the Eastern Wrestling League's Wrestler of the Week ended Jan. 10. Stine defeated Penn State's Brett Calabretta in dual meet competition on Jan. 5. He then went on to claim three more victories at the Syracuse duals held Jan. 10. There Stine defeated Ohio University's Dan Bednar and majored both Seton Hall's Marc Bautis and Rutgers' Chirs Federici. Stine currently holds an overall record of 24-8, including two falls and six major decisions. He is the second Pittsburgh wrestler to receive the EWL honor this season. Senior Chad Jesko received the reward on Nov. 29.
