Women's Tennis Finishes Weekend Competition

PITTSBURGH - The Panthers traveled to West Point, N.Y. this past weekend to compete in the Eastern Intercollegiate Women's Tennis Championship hosted by the United States Military Academy.
In doubles competition, freshman Brooke Yablonski (Dalton, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) and sophomore Christin Glorioso (Fox Chapel, Pa./Fox Chapel) beat Fordham's Alison Varone and Meghan Womack, 6- 1, 7-5, but were defeated in the quarterfinal round by Seton Hall's Elizabeth Dugan and Judy McAuley, 6-2, 6-2, in the first bracket.
In the second doubles bracket, senior Alison Bucher (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and junior Leah Davis (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton H.S.) lost a tight match to Fordham's Morgan Brinley and Emily Najour,6-1, 4 6, 7-5, before going on to win the consolation bracket with a 6-4, 6-2, decision over Lehigh's Martina Reale and Julie Moscow.
Sarah Austin (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) began her sophomore campaign with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Army's Jen Blatty in the first singles bracket but lost in the next round to Kim Luff of Lehigh, 6-1, 6-4.
In the second singles bracket, sophomore Lindsay Carlson (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) was defeated by Fordham's Alexandra Cazangiu, 6-3,6-2, and lost a heartbreaker in the consolation bracket to Jennifer Steele of Loyola University, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. The University of Maryland-Baltimore County's Karri Bielewicz defeated Panther freshman Nikki Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area), 6-4, 6-1, and went on to win the third singles bracket. Borza then defeated Loyola's Holly Martin, 6-4, 6-1, and Marisa Puga of Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-2, 6-0, before falling to Fordham's Bree Himmelstein, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, in the final round of the third consolation bracket.
Dana Jafarian (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) started her junior season with the Panthers with a 6-0, 6-0, win over Mary Washington College's Ashley Roeting. Jafarian then lost a tough match to Annie Collier of the U.S Military Academy, 6-3, 6-2.
Pittsburgh will travel to Youngstown State on Tuesday, September 28 before hosting Duquesne on Tuesday, Oct. 5.
