Teague Moore Qualifies for Olympic Wrestling
4/24/2000
LAS VEGAS - Teague Moore, volunteer coach for the Pittsburgh wrestling team, has qualified for the 2000 Olympic Trials after placing fifth at 119 pounds in the freestyle competition at the U.S. Nationals held in Las Vegas, Nev. (April 21-22). Panthers assistant coach Jason Robison placed eighth at 213.75 pounds, while redshirt freshman Carl Fronhofer also finished eighth at 167.5 pounds in the Greco-Roman competition.
A native of Pittsburgh, Moore joined the Panther wrestling staff this season to train for the U.S. Nationals tournament. He began the competition with an 11-0 technical fall in just 2:29 over Davon Gray of Michigan. Moore went on to defeat Leroy Vega of Minnesota, 9-3, before he was defeated, 3-1, by Lou Rosselli of Edinboro, Pa. But in his final match of the tournament, he met Rosselli again, this time winning by an injury default to place fifth. The top six placewinners from each weight class qualify for the trials to be held this summer.
Robison, a 1998 graduate of Edinboro, also joined the coaching staff at Pittsburgh this season. The Allison Park-native won his first two matches of the tournament at 213.75 pounds with a technical fall (11-1) over Ron Bradbury of the Hawaii Navy and a 3-1 decision over Mark Munoz. Robison then fell to Joel Sharratt of the Minnesota Storm by a 5-1 decision. He faced Munoz again in his final match and defaulted due to injury to place eighth in his weight class.
Fronhofer has had continued success on the national and world levels of Greco-Roman wrestling in his short college career. Greco-Roman style differs from collegiate wrestling in that wrestlers are only allowed to attack their opponent from the waste up. Fronhofer won his first match at 167.50 pounds, a 13-3 technical fall over Kelly Block of Minnesota. He was then pinned by Keith Sieraki of the Armed Forces before losing a 3-1 decision to Rob McKenny of Quantico, Va., to place eighth.
Fronhofer compiled an overall record of 29-11 at 165 pounds for the Panthers during the 1999-00 season and qualified for the NCAA Championships. A native of Salem, N.Y., he claimed the 167.50-pound weight class at the 1999 FILA Junior Greco-Roman National Championships and World Team Trials last spring.
Former Panther and two-time national champion Pat Santoro also competed at the U.S. Nationals and placed third in the freestyle division to qualifiy for the Olympic Trials at 152 pounds.
