Two Pittsburgh Wrestlers Honored by the NWCA

PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh wrestlers Nick Mengerink and Carl Fronhofer have been honored as Academic All-American Honorable Mentions by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). As a team, the Panthers ranked 26th among the nation's top wrestling programs for overall grade-point average with a 2.875.
Mengerink holds a 3.43 cumulative grade-point average as a biological science major. He is a repeat NWCA Academic All-American and a University Scholar-Athlete. Mengerink was recently honored with the Panther Award, one of the University's highest athletic honors, given to the senior male and female student-athletes who have best promoted Pittsburgh athletics through outstanding athletic acheivement.
The Upper Sandusky, Ohio-native has been a standout for the Panthers over the last four years while serving the 1999 season as a team co-captain. A senior academically, he earned All-America honors as a redshirt freshman in 1998, placing eighth at 167 pounds at the NCAA championships. Mengerink was a three-time national qualifier and completed his career with an outstanding record of 105-27, ranking him 10th in all-time victories at Pittsburgh.
Fronhofer, a redshirt freshman, boasts a grade-point average of 3.64 as a still undecided major. He recently qualified for the 2000 Olympic Trials after competing at the U.S. Nationals held in Las Vegas, Nev. Fronhofer placed eighth in the Greco-Roman competition at 167.50 pounds.
Fronhofer compiled an overall record of 29-11 at 165 pounds for the Panthers during the 1999-00 season and qualified for the NCAA Championships. A native of Salem, N.Y., he claimed the 167.50-pound weight class at the 1999 FILA Junior Greco-Roman National Championships and World Team Trials last spring.
