Carl Fronhofer Captures Second-Straight Junior National Title
5/17/2000
LINCOLN, NEB. - Carl Fronhofer, a redshirt freshman on the University of Pittsburgh wrestling team, claimed the 167.5-pound weight class for the second-straight year at the 2000 FILA Junior Greco-Roman National Championships and World Team Trials held in Lincoln, Neb., on May 11. He was also honored for the second time as the tournament's outstanding wrestler and has qualified to compete for the United States at the 2000 FILA Junior Greco-Roman World Championships in Nantes, France, July 3-9.
"This is outstanding for Carl," said Pittsburgh Head Wrestling Coach Rande Stottlemyer. "To repeat as both the junior national champion and the outstanding wrestler of the tournament is just a tremendous achievement for such a deserving and talented young man."
Fronhofer, a 2000 Olympic Trials qualifier and a native of Salem, N.Y., has had continued success on the national and world levels of Greco-Roman wrestling in his short college career. Greco-Roman style differs from collegiate wrestling in that wrestlers are only allowed to attack their opponent from the waste up. Fronhofer faced John Lorenz of Marquette, Mich., in the championship bout, and captured the title in dramatic fashion, pinning his opponent in just 1:30.
Fronhofer compiled an overall record of 29-11 at 165 pounds for the Panthers during the 1999-00 season and qualified for the NCAA Championships. He was recently honored by the NWCA as an All-Academic Honorable Mention, boasting a grade-point average of 3.64 as a still undecided major. Fronhofer has qualified for the Olympic Trials after competing at the U.S. Nationals held in Las Vegas, Nev., where he placed eighth in the Greco-Roman competition, also at 167.50 pounds.
