The Pittsburgh wrestling team claimed an Eastern Wrestling League victory over rival West Virginia, 28-12, Feb. 10 at Fitzgerald Field House. The win improved the Panthers to 6-5 overall and 3-4 in the EWL.
Junior Shawn Amistade (Washington, Pa./Trinity) began the scoring for Pittsburgh with a 13-4 major decision over Greg White at 125 pounds. Freshman Joe Crecca (Roselle Park, N.J./Blair Academy) earned a technical fall, 16-1, over Brian Floyd at 133 pounds, while Zach Hasse (Washington, W.Va./Parkersburg South) claimed a 5-2 decision over Joe Finch at 141 pounds.
The Panthers lost both the 149- and 157-pound bouts, but sophomore Carl Fronhofer (Salem, N.Y./Salem) picked up the scoring for Pittsburgh with a major decision, 18-6, over Orlando Ricci at 165 pounds. Rob Black (Pitttsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) dropped the 174-pound bout, but Dan Stine (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) and David Sandberg (Spokane, Wash./North Central) each claimed falls over their opponents at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively, to lead the Panthers to the victory.
Pittsburgh wraps up its regular-season schedule at Edinboro in an EWL matchup on Wednesday, Feb. 14.
