Panthers Defeat Virginia Tech

The Men's Swimming team closed out the regular season with a 207-93 win over the Hokies from Virginia Tech. The Panthers improved their overall record to 9-2 and 4-0 in the Big East. Their undefeated record in the Big East has been fueled by solid performances in all strokes. Against Virginia Tech the Panthers finished first in all but three events.
Three swimmers won two individual events a piece for the Panthers. Eric Limkemann (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:32.07 and also won the 500 free (4:40.02). Max von Bodungen (Malmo, Sweden/Borgarskolan) nabbed the 200 free at 1:40.27 and 100 free at 46.47. With scores of 285.45 and 326.92, junior Blair Beal (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) swept the one- and three-meter diving events. The Panthers also collected wins in the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay.
Freshman Randy Gertenbach (El Centro, Calif./Paradise Valley) came out on top of the competition in the 100 breast with a time of 58.28. Additionally, sophomore Mike Grube (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) took the top spot in the 50 free (20.86). Steve Siler's (Chicago, Ill./Westmont) performance in the 200 back (1:51.75) got the Panthers another individual win. Also attaining first place status was Miah Heath (Estes Park, Colo./Estes Park) in the 100 fly (51.34). Will Eden (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) closed out the individual victories for the Panthers with a 1:54.75 performance in the 200 individual medley.
Co-captain senior Patrick Shedlock (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) competed in his final regular season event.
The Panthers will host the Pittsburgh College Invite on Saturday, February 3. The team will travel to Long Island, N.Y. for the Big East Championships being held from Thursday, February 15 through Saturday, February 16.
