Ohio Defeats Women's Soccer 4-1
10/25/2002
PITTSBURGH ? In a contest which saw heavy rain throughout, Ohio scored three unanswered goals to defeat the Pittsburgh women?s soccer team 4-1 Friday at Founders Field. The loss drops Pittsburgh to 4-14-0 overall while Ohio improves to 11-3-2.
Ohio?s Abby Leonard started the scoring when she scored on a 30-yard shot after taking a pass from Gina Siedentopft just 3:42 into the game. But Pittsburgh tied the game up at 1-1 50 seconds later when Cara Kappler sent a through ball into the center of the field. With the wet field conditions, the ball bounced over Ohio goalkeeper Michelle Meglaughlin?s head and into the net for the 1-1 tie.
But Ohio answered three minutes later when Carolyn Valade trapped a pass and sent a shot past Pittsburgh goalkeeper Jamie Pelusi for a 2-1 Bobcat lead.
Valade scored her second goal of the evening at the 48:19 mark as she headed in a ball sent by Abby Leonard off an indirect kick. The Bobcats made it 4-1 when Rachel Najjer stole an errant Pittsburgh pass and slipped the ball past Pelusi on a one-on-one breakaway.
Pittsburgh hosts Syracuse Sunday at Founders Field for its final regular season contest. Game time is 1 p.m. The game will be the last for Pittsburgh?s six seniors- Lauren Sciocchetti, Cara Kappler, Kimberly Sturk, Jacqueline Fix, Melinda Beddo and Laura Marsh.
