PITTSBURGH?Following an eight-day layoff for the holidays, Pittsburgh?s women?s basketball team defeated Norfolk State, 104-78, on Sunday evening at the Petersen Events Center. The Panthers, who have won four of their past five games, improved to 7-3 on the year while the Spartans, who play in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, fell to 0-7. Senior Laine Selwyn (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) posted her second career triple-double as she finished with 11 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds. Selwyn had a triple-double last year in the Panthers? 77-45 victory over St. John?s on Feb. 9, 2002. She tallied 12 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against the Red Storm. After a sluggish start to the game, Pittsburgh slowly grabbed a 24-point lead (57-33) with 1:55 left in the first half on a Selwyn layup. The Panthers entered halftime with a 57-36 advantage thanks to a strong shooting performance from the field (57 percent), including 59 percent (7 of 12) from behind the arc. Haley Harguth (Beaverton, Ore./Beaverton) led the 3-point attack by making 4 of 5 in the first 20 minutes. In the second half, Pittsburgh continued to pour it on and opened up as much as a 30-point lead (83-53) before cruising to their seventh victory of the season. For the game, the Panthers shot 57 percent from the field (39 of 68) compared to Norfolk State?s 38 percent (29 of 76). Pittsburgh also drained 9 of 16 (56 percent) from behind the arc. Mandy Wittenmyer (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led the Panthers with 17 points, while Harguth and Dallas Williams (Mason, Ohio/Mason) each totaled 12 points. Tamika Cox led Norfolk State with 28 points and Lawanda Newman added 19. Pittsburgh takes on its second consecutive MEAC-foe on New Year?s Eve as it hosts Howard (0-8) at the Petersen Events Center. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m. NOTES: Pittsburgh is now 5-0 in their new arena...this is the second time this year the Panthers have scored 100 points. They defeated Florida Atlantic, 101-87...Pittsburgh owns a perfect 12-0 record all-time against teams from the MEAC...the Panthers outrebounded Norfolk State, 41-36.
