Women's Soccer Falls to Villanova 2-1 in Overtime

Laura Johnson?s goal nine minutes into overtime lifted Villanova to a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh women?s soccer team Friday night at Founders Field. The loss drops Pittsburgh to 3-5-0 and 0-2-0 in the Big East while Villanova is now 5-0-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the Big East.
Johnson finished the shot after Brittany Hunsaker?s cornerkick sailed into the crowded box. Janessa Jeltema also earned an assist on the goal which occurred with just one minute of overtime to go.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute when Brittany Hunsaker finished on a through ball from Julie Battista. Hunsaker controlled the ball, dribbled several times then sent her shot into the lower right side of the net.
Pittsburgh battled back with several second half opportunities. Erin Hills tied the game at 1-1 in the 66th minute when she trapped a shot off the goalpost and sent the ball past Villanova goalkeeper Chrissy Dolan into the upper lefthand corner.
The two teams traded shots for the first nine minutes of the overtime period before Johnson scored the game winner.
Villanova outshot Pittsburgh 19-16. Pittsburgh hosts Rutgers Sunday at 1 p.m.
