SYRACUSE, N.Y. ? Syracuse and Pittsburgh each earned one point in the Big East women?s soccer standings after a 1-1 tie at the SU Soccer Stadium on Friday. The Orange is now 6-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the league, while the Panthers are 4-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in league action.
Syracuse scored first with a goal in the 38th minute of play. Jenna Richter found the back of the net off a cross from Molly McManus to put the Orange ahead 1-0.
SU held the lead until the 78th minute of play. Carli Brill?s free kick found the head of Katie Surma in the penalty box for the game-tying goal. Despite chances on both sides, neither team would score the rest of the way.
Syracuse goalkeeper Shannon Myers made six saves on the night. Pittsburgh keeper Jamie Pelusi made 11 saves, including two sprawling stops to prevent the Orange from breaking the tie.
The Orange had two opportunities to take the lead late in the second half. Pelusi stopped a one-on-one dual with Syracuse's Shana Thomas, and later made a diving save of high shot from Courtney Spencer. Spencer had another chance in overtime. She beat five defenders down the middle of the field, but her shot sailed just over the crossbar.
Syracuse held a 23-14 advantage in shots. It was the second straight game that the Orange squeezed off 23 shots. SU also had a 14-4 corner-kick advantage.
