10/17/2004
PISCATAWAY, NJ ? Pittsburgh women's soccer team shutout Rutgers University 1-0 on Sunday. The Panther?s record in the Big East is now 2-4-1 and 5-7-1 overall. Rutgers was ranked seventh in the Mid-Atlantic region this week with a record of 9-9-0 overall and 4-5-0 in the Big East.
The Panthers scored in the 29th minute, when Lisa Schulte intercepted a back pass and raced down the field. Her first shot was stopped by Rutgers keeper Robyn Jones and Janean Gardener's follow-up was also deflected. The ball then came back to the far post, and Schulte was able to knock it in on the goal line, past a sprawled out Rutgers defender and Jones. Schulte?s game winning goal was her second goal of the season. Gardner's assist gained her her first points of the season.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second half of play. Pittsburgh goal keeper Jamie Pelusi posted her fourth shutout of the season by making four saves in the game.
Following the win Coach Sue-Moy Chin said this about the team and players, "The defense played great and consitently, as they have been all year. Jamie (Pelusi) also played great and consistenly, as she has been doing all year. Corina (Sebesta) had a good weekend."
"This is a really big win, especially after the loss Friday night. Any win in the Big East gives us points towards the Big East tournament, and we want to try and qualify for the tourney," Chin replied when asked what the win means for the team.
The top eight teams from the Big East will quallify for the Big East Tournament.
Pittsburgh will be back in action on Tuesday October 19th at home against St. Francis (Pa) at 7p.m.
