Women's Soccer Defeats Old Dominion 1-0
9/12/2004
GREENSBORO, N.C.- The Pittsburgh women's soccer team defeated Old Dominion 1-0 Sunday in the Panthers' second game of the UNC-Greensboro Adidas Classic.
Pittsburgh's offense came to life in the 27th minute when Aimee Romasco( Moon Township, Pa./Moon/George Mason) took a indirect kick from outside the 18 yard box. The ball was controlled off the kick by Kristina Francois(Springfield, Va./Paul IV) inside the penalty box. Francois beat the ODU keeper but an ODU defender deflected the ball out of bounds. The next play was a Pittsburgh corner kick from Jen DeLaHoz (Amawalk, N.Y./Somers) and a good shot came from Carli Brill (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor).
Following Pittsburgh?s offensive pressure, ODU was able to carry the ball down field and get a shot off. The Panthers were able to clear the ball to Francois who beat her defender and took a shot from outside the 18 yard box. The ball rocketed to the far upper corner of the goal, hit the post and flew into the back of the net. The goal came unassisted.
For the remainder of the first half Pittsburgh kept up the intensity and limited ODU to 3 shots in the half.
The second half started similar to the first, neither team controlling the game. Pittsburgh and ODU came out strong. ODU's best scoring opportunity came from Bea Gugliotti when her shot hit the top of the crossbar and went over the goal.
Pittsburgh improves to 3-2-0 on the season. The Panthers are back in action at Founders Field on Friday Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. against Georgetown.
