Women's Soccer Wins Home Opener
9/3/2004
PITTSBURGH-The Pittsburgh Women?s Soccer team defeated Duquesne 4-1 on Friday night. The game was Pittsburgh?s home opener.
From the opening whistle Pittsburgh put the pressure on Duquesne. Pittsburgh?s defense and midfield did an excellent job of keeping the ball out of their end. Working together in the middle of the field were Erin Hills(Burke, Va./James W. Robinson Secondary) and Corina Sebesta(Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua).
The first goal of the game came in the 26th minute from Pittsburgh forward Cara Senger(Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic). Senger was able to score off of their first corner kick of the game with the assistance of Lisa Schulte (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and Jen DeLaHoz(Amawalk, N.Y./Somers). Just before the first half ending Duquesne put the pressure on Pittsburgh, but was not able to find the back of the net.
Only four minutes into the second half Pittsburgh added another goal to the game. The goal came out of very hard work from forward Sara Gutting (Erie, Pa./McDowell). Gutting was able to carry the ball down the field and beat the Duquesne goalie, Virgina Bondi, but was not able to finish the shot. Teammate Kristina Francois(Springfield, Va./Paul VI) took the shot but it was deflected by a Duquesne defender, but Sebesta was able to finish the play with a strong shot to the upper right corner.
Less then ten minutes later the third Pittsburgh goal came from Francois assisted by Sebesta and defender Carli Brill(Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor).
Brill and the rest of the defense had held Duquesne scoreless for more then 60 minutes of the game. Duquesne?s one and only goal came from Elizabeth Riggs. Riggs scored on a deflected ball by Pittsburgh goalie Jamie Pelusi( Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton).
The fourth and final goal from Pittsburgh came off of a free kick by Hills. Hills took the kick near Duquesne?s goal and Rachel Vecchio(Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) was able to find the back of the net for the second time this season.
When asked how she felt about the teams playing so far Coach Sue-Moy Chin said this ?After the rain delay (in Bowling Green) everyone has been playing well since that point. This was a very solid team effort?the players worked extremely hard and deserved this win.?
Pittsburgh?s next action is Friday September 10th at UNC-Greensboro for the UNC-Greensboro Tournament. The next time to see Pittsburgh at home is Friday September 17th at 7 p.m. against Georgetown.
