VILLANOVA, Pa. -The Pitt women's soccer was defeated by Villanova 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. The loss moves the Panthers to 2-5-2 in the Big East and 3-9-3 overall. Villanova improves to 5-0-3 in the Big East and 9-3-4 overall.
The Wildcats got on the board early when Nikki Mabery scored the lone goal for Villanova. At the six minute mark, Mabery was able to finish a cross and score on Pitt goalkeeper Jamie Pelusi. The ball was crossed in front of the goal and Mabery worked into the scramble in front of the net, gathered the ball, and got a shot off, lifting the Wildcats to a 1-0 lead.
"It was a really tough game and the field conditions made it tough to play," head coach Sue-Moy Chin said. "The field was sloppy and made it tough to control the ball but I thought both teams fought hard. The goal came off a cross and one of their players was able to poke the ball in but in my mind Jamie was fouled on the play. It's hard to loose a game on a goal like that. I think we fought really hard in the second half but came up short."
After the early goal neither team was able to finish any scoring chances. Pitt goalkeeper Jamie Pelusi had five saves preventing the Wildcats from increasing their lead.
Pitt continues its string of road games when it travels to Providence on Friday, October 21st and Connecticut on Sunday, October 23rd.
