Men's Swimming and Diving Dominates Oakland University

PITTSBURGH--The University of Pittsburgh women's swimming and diving team claimed 10 first-place victories and senior Tommy Bird claimed three first-place finishes, as the men swam past Oakland University, 165-78, this afternoon at Trees Pool. The team improves to 3-1 on the season.
Bird (Charlestown, W.Va./Capitol) opened the meet with a collective win in the 200 medley relay and followed with individual victories in the 50 free (20.62) and 200 back (1:53.13).
The rest of the 200 medley relay team includes Warren Barnes (Pickering, Ont./Dunbarton), Chad White (Chamberburg, Pa./Chambersburg) and Michael Bernardi (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex).
The men dominated individual events en route to winning the meet.
Jonathan Buchanan (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) led a four-man charge in the 1,000 free with a time of 9:31.57. Scott Shearer Alison Park, Pa./North Alleghany) finished in second (9:49.31), Steve Jackson (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) took third (9:51.39), while Nathan McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa./The Kiski School) (9:56.08) rounded out the top-four times.
In the 200 fly, Chris George (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) took the lead at the 150 mark and sailed to a 1:53.01 win. Chris Howard (Medford, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) finished third in the same event.
Jason Miller (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) won the 200 free at 1:42.33, while Jeff Leath (Mechanicsville, Va./New Community) and Andy Kyrejko (West Orange, N.J./The Montclair Kimberly Academy) followed in second and third, respectively.
Aleksandr Volovetski (Seffner, Fla./Armwood) claimed the 1M boards with a score of 330.90. Second and third went to Jeremy Stultz (Pittsburgh, PA./North Hills) and Dennis Nemtsanov (Calhoun, Ga./Robert E. Lee). In the 3M boards the order was Nemtsanov, Volovetski and Stultz.
George was a multi-winner after claiming the 500 free with a time of 4:39.45, while the 200 free relay team of Darryl Washington (Aldan, Pa./Penn Wood), Leath, Bernardi and Miller also took a top finish.
Pitt will travel to Indiana on Friday, Nov. 18 as they compete in the three-day Indiana Invite.
