MORGANTOWN-The University of Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team won seven events on its way to a 133-104 win over conference foe, West Virginia this afternoon. Pitt's record improves to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big East.
The meet opened with the men 400 medley relay team of Thomas Bird (Charleston, W.Va./Capital), Warren Barnes (Pickering, Ont./Dunbarton), Jason Miller (Mechanicburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Darryl Washington (Aldan, Pa./Penn Wood) taking first at 3:20.28.
Miller also won the 200 IM at 1:51.49, while his co-captain Washington later claimed a win in the 100 free (46.00) and took second in the 50 free with a 20.87 effort.
Juniors Nathan McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa./Kiski) and Jeff Leath (Mechancisville, Va./New Community) and sophomore Steve Jackson (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) ran the table in the 200 free. McCutcheon stopped the clock at 1:44.33, Leath finished right behind him at 1:44.78, while Jackson clocked in at 1:46.43.
Later in the 200 back, Leath finished ahead of the pack with a time of 1:51.56, and freshman Chris Howard (Medford, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) took second in the 200 fly at 1:54.24.
Sophomore Chris George (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School), McCutcheon, Jackson and sophomore Scott Shearer (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) took the bottom four scoring spots as they finished second through fifth, respectively. Barnes took silver in the 200 breast in the final individual swimming race.
Sophomore Jeremy Stultz (Pittsburgh, Pa. /North Hills) finished first in the 1M diving, while senior Adam Natishyn (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) claimed second. But in the 3M boards it was Natishyn taking first and Stultz finishing second.
The Panthers will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 13 as they open a two-day meet against Maryland and Villanova at Trees Pool.
