PITT VOLLEYBALL EARNS SECOND BIG EAST WIN THIS WEEKEND

PITTSBURGH - The Pitt volleyball team captured its second conference win of the weekend with a three-game sweep over USF this afternoon. The Panthers (15-6, 4-2 Big East) hit .232 against the Bulls (7-10, 2-3 Big East) and recorded 17 blocks compared to USF's five.
"We played with a lot more energy," said Head Coach Chris Beerman. "I thought we really attacked South Florida with our blocking and digging."
Freshman Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) led the team with 11 kills for a 3.67 per game average. She recorded a .370 hitting percentage and also put up four blocks. Junior Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) had 10 kills for a 3.34 average. She hit .207 against the Bulls and had nine digs.
Libero Michelle Rossi (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) recorded 20 digs for a 6.67 average and also scored on a service ace. Senior setter Azadeh Boroumand (Red Deer, Alberta/Thurber) had 32 assists and five blocks, contributing 5.5 points to the Panthers' victory.
Both Jessica Moses (North Olmstead, Ohio/Lutheran West) and Kim Kern (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) led the Panthers' defense with eight blocks each for a 2.67 average. Kern tied her career high of two solo blocks, and Moses had one.
The Panthers started off game one with a 4-1 lead. Blocks from Kelly Campbell (Mansfield, Ohio/Pacific) and Moses moved Pitt ahead, 8-4. Dooley's kill kept the Panthers in control of the game and put them at 16-10. Pitt kept its six-point lead with a block from Moses and Boroumand. A service ace by Rossi moved the Panthers into a 10-point lead, 26-16. Moses scored the game-winning point with a kill to give the Panthers a 30-19 victory. Dooley led the team with five kills. Boroumand put up 11 assists, and Moses had four blocks. Rossi contributed six digs. Pitt hit .387 compared to USF's .116, and the Panthers led six blocks to zero.
Pitt kept its momentum going into game two, commanding an early 5-2 lead after a block from Moses and Dooley. A kill from Andreyko moved Pitt ahead, 9-6. Moses provided a solid defense in game two as well, scoring on a block solo to keep the Panthers in the lead, 13-10. She went on to score on a kill, moving the Panthers to 17-13. Two errors by the Bulls put Pitt in position to win, 25-17. A kill from Andreyko set the Panthers up at 29, and an attack error by the Bulls gave Pitt the game two win, 30-27. Andreyko recorded five putaways for Pitt, and Boroumand had 13 assists. Three Panthers had two blocks each, and Rossi recorded eight digs. Pitt hit .149 to USF's .057 and had five blocks to three.
The Bulls fought back at the beginning of game three, taking a 7-5 lead. USF maintained control, and a kill moved them ahead, 13-8. Pitt, however, made a comeback halfway through the game, and a block from Kern and Dooley put the Panthers in the lead, 16-14. Pitt moved to a four-point lead at 20 after two errors from USF. A putaway by Moses pushed the Panthers further ahead, 25-18. The Bulls had a service error to set Pitt up for the match point. A block assist from Boroumand and Kern gave the Panthers the game three win, 30-20. Andreyko led Pitt with four kills, and Boroumand contributed eight assists. Rossi had six digs, and Kern put up four blocks. Pitt hit .206, and USF had a -.067 hitting percentage. The Panthers had six blocks, and the Bulls recorded two.
The Panthers will continue conference play next weekend when they travel to West Virginia. They'll face the Mountaineers on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
NOTES--Kern was one of two Panthers to tie a career high in blocking this afternoon. Campbell also tied her personal best of two block assists.
