UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Six members of the Pitt wrestling team traveled to Penn State last weekend for the Nittany Lion Open. Pitt freshman Ryan Tomei was the most successful of the group, bringing in a 3-2 record at heavyweight. Also picking up a few wins was freshman Zack Fraley at 125 pounds.
Tomei (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) was matched up against Cornell's Jason Manross in his first bout. In his second match, he fell in a 4-3 decision to Michigan's Matt Guhn. Tomei then picked up two wins as he pinned Buffalo's Mark Germano at the 0:19 mark and won a 9-4 decision over Pitt-Johnstown's Chris Dempsey. In his final bout of the tournament, Tomei lost a 2-3 decision to VMI's Scott Buhman.
Fraley (Huntington, W.Va./Huntington) went 2-2 at 125 pounds. He won a 13-0 major decision over Andrew Delguercio of Rutgers. In his next match he was pinned by Lehigh's Matt Fisk at the 1:06 mark. Fraley then won by forfeit over Rider's Jim Porch. In his final match, Fraley fell in a 5-0 decision to Penn's Roger Peterkin.
