SACRAMENTO, Calif. - It was a successful day for the Pitt men's track and field team at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Both Tony Bonura and Sam Bair turned in top performances at the A.G. Spanos Sports Complex on the Sacramento State University campus. They'll advance to Saturday's finals.
Bonura (Plum, Pa./Canisius College) qualified for Saturday's finals after throwing for a distance of 67.45 meters. The top 12 competitors qualified for the finals where Bonura hopes to have a top-three finish. Last year he earned All-America honors with a ninth-place finish.
Bair (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area) finished 11th in the 1,500 meters preliminaries, high enough to make it to Saturday's finals. With a personal-best time of 3:42.84, Bair was just .20 shy of breaking the school record. This is his second national competition of the year, having qualified for the indoor championships in the mile.
Both competitors will appear in the finals on Saturday. In the meantime, Panther fans can catch sophomore Keith Higham (Carlisle, England/Trinity Carlisle) in action by tuning into CSTV for live coverage from 8 to 10 p.m. EST. Higham is currently tied for first entering tomorrow's pole vault finals.
