Chicago, Ill. -- The Pitt women's soccer team claimed its second conference win of the season as it handed DePaul a 1-0 loss at Wish Field on Friday. Pitt improves to 7-2-2 overall, 2-1-1 in the Big East, as DePaul falls to 3-7-1 overall, 0-4-0 in the Big East.
"We played well in the first half," Pitt head coach Sue-Moy Chin said. "In the second half we were really able to control possession. Our defense did an excellent job tonight, they never let down."
Freshman Megan Watson (Hockessin, Del./St. Mark's) had the lone goal for the Panthers in the game's eighth minute. The goal marked Watson's first career goal. The goal was assisted by Rachel Vecchio (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and Jennifer Kritch (Northville, Mich./Northville). Vecchio gathered the ball in the right corner of the 18-yard box and passed the ball to Kritch. Kritch then served the ball to Watson who was able to redirect the ball past DePaul goalkeeper Cara LaRocca for the score. Vecchio's assist was her first of the season. Kritch leads the Panthers in assists (5) as this also ranks her among the leaders in the BIG EAST.
DePaul's best chance came early in the second half when Kelly DeBaene got a shot off. Freshman goalkeeper Alison Finch (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park) deflected the shot and preserved the shutout for the Panthers. Finch recorded nine saves on the night.
Pitt's defense was impenetrable as it held the 1-0 win for the Panthers.
