EMMITSBURG, Md - Mount St. Mary's handed the Pitt Men's Soccer team a 1-0 defeat on Sunday. With a 0-3-1 record, Pitt will open conference play this week at home against Louisville on Fri., Sept. 8.

Mount St. Mary's took the lead in the 21st minute of play when defensive back Brandon Moncrief headed the ball into the right side of the net off a corner kick from teammate Vinnie Berry. The Mountaineers outshot Pitt 13-6 and had 11 corner kicks to the Panthers' three.

Freshman Matt Baker (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem) attempted to give Pitt the lead early in the 19th minute, but had his shot stopped by Mount St. Mary's goalie Mark Murphy.

Midfielder Brendon Smith (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) had an opportunity to tie the game up in the 49th minute before sophomore Matt Firster (Harborcreek, Pa./Harbercreek) took one more shot at Murphy late in the 81st minute.

Murphy finished the game with three saves, earning a shutout, while Pitt goalie Andy Jorgensen (Doylestown, Pa./Elizabethtown/Central Bucks East) had five saves.

The Panthers will open Big East conference play Fri., Sept. 8 against Louisville at 7:30 p.m. at Founders Field and host Cincinnati on Sun., Sept. 10 at 1:00 p.m.
