Women's Basketball Diary

This season, various members of the Pitt women's basketball staff will contribute to a weekly diary throughout the season. The diary will be a behind-the-scenes look at the team and will give fans an insight into what it takes to be a Pitt women's basketball player and some of the fun had off the court.

Today we are headed to Mount St. Mary's for a midweek game at head coach Agnus Berenato's alma mater. The team is anxious to get back on the court after 10 days off. Bus trips are always interesting and full of energy. This one started off with a few girls celebrating test scores they just received before they settled into their video and scout of Mount St. Mary's. After the scout, Coach B broke out a worksheet of goals for the team which included things like field goal percentage, rebounds, etc., to which Marcedes Walker exclaimed "Coach B, I'm on vacation!" Not surprisingly, her response was met with laughter from the team and scowls from the coaching staff.
That is the great thing with this team, though. Basketball is a vacation. It isn't that they don't work hard every single day - trust me, they work very, very hard. But their eyes light up when they hit the court. These girls live for game day.
Upon arriving in Emmitsburg, Md., the bus stopped for dinner at a quaint place called the Cozy Inn and Diner, where the girls enjoyed some good "home cooking." They even met a few new Pitt fans and invited them to the game the following night.
The next day began early. Game day just has a different feel to it. There is usually someone walking around the breakfast room pumping the team up and making sure they know there is a big game coming up. Everyone was also excited to get to see their families for Thanksgiving. With Maryland being within driving distance for most of the girls' families, Pitt had a strong contingent in the stands at The Mount.
Pitt cruised to an 82-31 win against Mount St. Mary's with everyone on the team playing a substantial role in the win. After the game, the family the team met the previous night was waiting around to get autographs from the team. Pitt's newest fans! With Mount St. Mary's being Agnus Berenato's alma mater, the school wanted to celebrate her homecoming and asked her to speak after the game to a select group of people.
That night, most of the girls went with their families for a rare holiday at home. Pitt has the week off from games and the coaching staff allowed the team to go home for a few days with the promise that workouts would continue.
Friday the team will resume practice and will get ready to face No. 3-ranked Maryland. Games like that one are why these girls came to Pitt. They know that to be the best you have to play the best.
Until next time...The Sky's the Limit!
