"We had great possession of the ball in the first half," Pitt head coach Sue-Moy Chin said. "We dominated the game, moved the ball well and switched the field well.
Pitt's first goal came in the 27th minute when Ashley Habbel (
Habbel's assist gives her a total of 24 career points as she approaches the Panthers' all-time career points list, needing just five more points to make the list. She has tallied 10 career goals and four career assists.
Only two minutes into the second half, Laura Berbert (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) directed a corner kick to Janean Gardner (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill North) who scored the Panthers' second goal from only a few yards out, widening Pitt's lead to 2-0.
Syracuse answered when Megan Bellingham headed a cross kick for the Orange's lone goal in the 64th minute for the games' final of 2-1.
Pitt will travel to Jamaica, N.Y. on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 1 p.m. to play St. John's in another Big East matchup.
