PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh track and field teams took part in the Penn State National Open this weekend and returned home with two event crowns and multiple top-three finishes.
The women's 1600-meter relay team of Kari Hedderick (Erie, Pa./Fort Lebouf), Shanea Calhoun (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross), Shantea Calhoun (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross) and Kaetlyn Brown (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) captured first place, besting 16 other teams in the event with a time of 3:45.87.
For the men, Curtis Larimer (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) was the first competitor to cross the finish line in the 5000 meters, finishing in 14:44.99. Following Larimer was Josh Christopher (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) in second and Sam Weiser (Ellwood City, Pa./West Point) in fourth.
The men's 3200-meter relay also turned in a fine showing with a second-place time of 7:41.18. The team of Lane King (Fairview, Pa./Fairview), Mike Meade (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin), Will Grinstead (Hornell, N.Y./Hornell) and Weiser trailed only Georgetown's University's squad and posted an IC4A qualifying time.
The Panthers also posted plenty of top-five performances throughout the weekend, beginning in the women's 200 meters and the Calhoun sisters. Shantea took second and Shanea came in fourth with ECAC qualifying times of 24.39 and 24.57, respectively.
Brown finished second in the women's 400 meter dash, narrowly missing first place by fractions of a second. Janessa Murphy (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) placed third in the long jump with an ECAC qualifying distance of 5.88 meters.
Sam Bair (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) added an exclamation point to Pitt's weekend when he posted a second-place plaudit in the mile run invitational with an NCAA automatic bid time of 4:00.15.
The Panthers will head back to State College for the third consecutive time next weekend for the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup. Pitt will also be sending some participants to the Kentucky Rod McCravy Memorial meet in Lexington, Ky., next weekend.
