PITTSBURGH -
In their final tune up of the preseason, the No. 23 Pitt women’s team defeated Premier Players, 76-65, in the team’s final exhibition game before the start of the season.
Pitt’s seniors, along with freshman Shawnice “Pepper” Wilson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Westinghouse) led the team in scoring. Wilson poured in 17 points and nine rebounds. Shavonte Zellous (Orlando, Fla./Jones) a senior guard, scored 15 points and added 13 rebounds, three assists and two blocks on the night. Xenia Stewart (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist) was 6 of 8 on the night with 14 points.
“Pepper was awesome for us tonight,” head coach Agnus Berenato said. “She played so well and worked so hard on the boards and it really showed on the stat sheet. She’s a freshman so she’s still learning a lot, but it’s pretty clear to anyone watching that she’s a very talented player.”
The final score was not indicative of the game as the Panthers led by 20 points for most of the second half, and by as many as 25, at 60-35. Also scoring in double figures on the night was sophomore Taneisha Harrison (Bowie, Md./St. John’s College), who added 10 points and four rebounds in 17 minutes of action off the bench.
Pitt opens the regular season Sunday, Nov. 16 at the prestigious State Farm Tip-Off Classic in Baton Rouge, La., against No. 10 Texas A&M.
