Pitt vs. Youngstown State
Thanksgiving Tournament
Quoting Head Coach Agnus Berenato
Opening Statement:
“I thought this was a great win. Everyone contributed. I thought the staff really prepared the girls for this game. We had five players with double figures and we set a new Petersen Events Center record for field goal percentage. The former record was 59 percent and we came in and shot 67.2 percent. For the women’s team to do that is awesome. We had an unselfish team. They made the extra pass. We’ve been telling them to make the extra pass and the percentage will go up. I was glad both of our seniors Shavonte Zellous and Xenia Stewart were on the all-tournament team. It just goes to show where they’ve brought the team and we also have a future with our baby, Pepper Wilson getting on the all-tournament team as well.”
On Youngstown State:
“They were physical. They play aggressive man-to-man defense, but we were prepared.”
On Halftime:
“Our staff was vocal at halftime. I thought there was a lack of intensity in our play for the first 16 minutes of the game and our staff let them know it. The players responded very well.”
On Pitt’s defense:
“We changed defenses throughout the game. We even played one we’ve never played before. Our zone defense was active. We played possession to possession. I thought we were dominating the boards and we got a good running game going, and that is result from playing good defense.”
On the win:
“This win tells the girls that this is our home and winning in dominating fashion tells us that this is our team, our game, our championship. It teaches us to have that killer instinct and to not lose focus. It is more mental about how winners act. Winners act a certain way and I believe that we have the best group of winners, both as players and a staff.”
