PITTSBURGH -
The Pitt women’s basketball team’s dominance continued Tuesday night with a 98-41 win over Wagner as the 16th-ranked Panthers improved to 8-1 on the season.
“I am really proud of our team,” head coach Agnus Berenato said. “Wagner did a great job, they fought until the end. Now we just need to focus on working hard and getting better. I think our girls really enjoy that. They like playing basketball with each other and the girls like wearing a Pitt uniform. They’re a group that wants to get better.”
Pitt had all five scorers tally double figure points, including 26 from senior guard Shavonte Zellous (Orlando, Fla./Jones), and the team contributed a school record-tying 12 blocks in the win.
Also scoring in double figures were Taneisha Harrison with 17, Shayla Scott and Xenia Stewart with 12 and Pepper Wilson with 10. Scott (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) added eight rebounds and Stewart (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist) added six rebounds and six assists.
Pitt out-rebounded the Seahawks 59 to 28 and forced 26 turnovers. The Panthers yet again shut down the opposing team’s leading scorer as Wagner’s Andrea Reed scored just six points on the night.
Pitt led 46-23 at the half, but pulled away in the second, outscoring Wagner 52-18 in the second half for the 57-point victory.
The Panthers will now travel to the state of Florida for games at Florida A&M on Friday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. and at Florida Sunday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m.
The Florida A&M contest will be broadcast live on Dec. 19 with Greg Linnelli and Mike Clark on the call. The Florida game on Dec. 21 will be a delayed broadcast at approximately 9 p.m. on FOX Sports 970 AM. All games can be heard live on PittsburghPanthers.com.
