PITTSBURGH—For the fourth consecutive season, Pitt’s women’s basketball team earned its 10th win of the season before the month of January, as the Panthers garnered a 93-50 victory over Western Kentucky, this evening, at the Petersen Events Center. Pitt improved to 10-2 on the season.
Tonight’s victory was also the 99th win for head coach Agnus Berenato at Pitt, as she has compiled a 99-68 record in her six seasons. This is also the fourth 40-plus margin of victory for the Panthers, this year.
Pitt was led by seniors Xenia Stewart (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist) and Shavonte Zellous (Orlando, Fla./Jones) with 17 points, a piece.
Also scoring in double figures, sophomore Taneisha Harrison (Bowie, Md./St. John’s College High) added 13 points and freshman Kate Popovec (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) chipped in 10.
Falling one short of tying the school record for blocked shots, Pitt stuffed 11 shots on the night. Junior Sophronia Sallard (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham/Kansas), sophomore Shayla Scott (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) and freshman Shawnice Wilson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Westinghouse) had three blocks each.
In the opening stanza, the Panthers and Hilltoppers went through eight lead changes before Pitt took the final lead with a 9-0 run that was sparked by a Popovec layup. The Panthers held a 37-24 advantage at halftime.
After the break, Pitt continued to push and extended its lead to 55-26 with an 18-2 run to open the second half.
Pitt opens Big East play at the Petersen Events Center on Sunday, Jan. 4, against West Virginia at 2 p.m.
