PITT BATTLES NOTRE DAME, FALLS 5-4 IN 10 INNINGS

Pitt found itself down 3-1 heading into the ninth inning after allowing Notre Dame to tally a run in the third inning and two more in the bottom of the eighth. The Panthers were able to tie the contest after combining a trio of hit-by-pitches with singles from Chris Tonte (
After holding Notre Dame in the bottom of the ninth, Pitt added another run in the top of the tenth when Tonte crossed the plate on an error by the Irish center fielder, giving the Panthers their first lead of the game.
Pitt's lead would be short lived as Notre Dame responded in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs to shut the door on the Panthers' comeback hopes. The Irish's Sean Gaston led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a passed ball. Pitt's defense then clamped down, registering two quick outs, but not before Gaston could reach third base. Brett Lilley then ripped a double, allowing Gaston to score and tie the game. The deadlock was broken just one batter later when David Mills brought Lilley around with a fly ball to shortstop.
The Panthers and the Irish will continue their series tomorrow at Frank Eck Stadium at 1:05 p.m.
