Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener to Akron, 6-2

AKRON, Ohio—The Pitt women’s soccer team opened its 2008 fall regular season with a 6-2 loss Friday evening at Akron.
Pitt jumped out a 2-1 lead early in the first half. Sophomore Liz Carroll gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead after finishing on shot from the top of the penalty box in the 11-minute mark. Sophomore Laura Berbert provided the assist. Two minutes later, Akron evened the score at 1-1 when Katelyn Hausfield finished on a crossing pass assisted by both Rachel Phillip and Britni Back. Pitt freshman Katelyn Ruhe gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead on her first collegiate goal in the 16th minute off an assist from Carroll.
Akron scored five unanswered goals to register its first win of the year. The host Zips evened the score at 2-2 on Hausfield’s second goal in the 21st minute. Jordan Baranowski gave Akron a 3-2 lead on an open net score in the 53rd minute. The goal proved to be the game-winner. Seven minutes later, Akron’s Back scored on an unassisted shot from 20 yards out. Akron made it 5-2 on an unassisted goal by Jessica Fix at the 63:33 mark. The Zips’ final score came in the 81st minute when Back took a pass from Baranowski.
Pitt finished the game with 11 shots including four on goal. Akron finished with 11 shots and eight on goal.
Pitt is back in action next weekend when it travels to the University of Illinois Tournament August 29-31. Pitt plays Dayton on Friday, Aug. 29 at 5 p.m. then will take on either Illinois or Arizona either in the championship or consolation game on Sunday, Aug. 31.
