Borza and Adams Advance To Finals At West Point

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Pitt’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Kristy Borza and sophomore Elizabeth Adams advanced to the finals of the top doubles flight at the Women’s Eastern Collegiate Championships, held at Army, this past weekend.
Borza (Beaver, Pa./ Beaver Area) and Adams (Reading, Pa./Wilson) opened the event with an 8-0 shut-out over Fairleigh Dickinson. The duo then won 8-5 over a pair from Seton Hall and 8-4 over Maryland Baltimore County’s squad.
Later in the championship match, Borza and Adams slipped to host Army’s team of Niki Flach and Sarah Giles-Madden by just two games (8-6).
Also competing in doubles, senior Christie D'achille (Gibsonia, Pa./North Allegheny) and junior Sabrina Visram (Windermere, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) earned their way to the semi-final round with a 9-7 win over an Army pair.
Freshman Minh Evans (Lansdale, Pa.) recorded a No. 5 seed in the top flight of singles action and advanced to the quarterfinals. In the first round of play, Evans came back after a first set lost to defeat Kate Donnelly (5-7, 7-5, 10-5).
Later, Evans fell in two sets to top-seeded Dominique Liquori (0-6, 1-6).
Senior Fran Liebenguth (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) dropped her first match of the tournament, but won the next two contests in the consolation bracket, which were 8-2 victories over opponents from FDU and Siena. Liebenguth then took a 1-8 loss to Quinnipiac’s Carly Loewenstein.
The Panthers travel to Norfolk, Va., to compete in the Hampton Roads Invitational on Friday, Oct. 10.
