
Women's Basketball Falls To Providence, 77-69

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Emily Cournoyer scored a season-best 19 points with 11 rebounds to propel Providence to a 77-69 upset of Pittsburgh (No. 20 ESPN/USA Today, No. 19 AP) on Wednesday night.
The Friars' win overshadowed the performance of Shavonte Zellous, who scored 28 points for Pitt (11-3, 1-1 Big East). Zellous, the nation's fourth-leading scorer at 23.1 points per game, had 16 in the first half.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Providence (7-7, 1-1 Big East), which also got 14 points from Mi-Khida Hankins and 13 from Trinity Hull.
Providence narrowed a 23-14 deficit with a 12-2 run late in the opening half to take the lead. Catherine Bove's 3-pointer with two minutes remaining in the first half pushed Providence's advantage to 34-27.
Providence's 40 points in the first half were a season high for the Friars, who led by as many as 16 with 9:14 to go in the second half.
Providence shot 53.8 percent from the field in the second half to Pitt's 34.3 percent.
The last time the Friars defeated a ranked opponent was Feb. 19, 2008, when they topped then-No. 22 Syracuse 62-58 at home.
