Women's Volleyball Earns Its Eighth Shutout of the Year

PITTSBURGH—Junior Amy Town recorded a match-high 13 kills as the University of Pittsburgh women’s volleyball team earned its eighth shutout of the season, in a 3-0 victory over DePaul at Fitzgerald Field House, this afternoon. The Panthers improved to 14-8 overall and 6-2 in the Big East, while the Blue Demons slipped to 6-15 on the year and 0-7 in the league.
Town went 13-for-18 and posted a season-best .722 hitting clip in the contest. She also added two blocks, one ace and a dig.
Senior Meagan Dooley chipped in 12 kills, three blocks and an ace, while junior Imani Harper added six kills, three blocks and a .455 hitting percentage.
As a team, Pitt hit .423 with 40 kills on 78 swings. The Panthers also out-blocked DePaul 6-to-1.
Sophomore Allyson Hodnik recorded 34 assists on the day, while senior Michelle Rossi tallied a match-high 10 digs.
The opening set of the match was close, as the Panthers only won the game by two points, 25-23. Town led all with nine kills in the contest. Her hitting percentage was .750, connecting on 9-of-12 attempts.
As a whole, the Panthers hit .515, going 19-for-33 in the set. Hodnik recorded 17 assists, as Dooley collected six kills.
Freshmen Jenn Katona and Alexa Campbell saw action in the second set and each recorded at least one kill, as the Panthers cruised to a 25-12 victory. Dooley tied the game high with four kills, and Town chipped in three.
The Panthers hit .407 in the second set, while holding the Blue Demons to negative .088 and just seven kills. Pitt also recorded three blocks in the game.
Pitt rallied six straight points to open the final set and eventually held a 12-2 lead before DePaul took a timeout. The Panthers continued to press, while the Blue Demons would commit nine attack errors. Pitt also collected five aces in the game, totaling eight in the match.
Harper recorded a set-high three kills in the third set.
Pitt will host its ‘Backyard Rival’ West Virginia on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m., in its “Blocking Out Breast Cancer” match. All fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of finding a cure for breast cancer.
