POST-GAME QUOTES
December 29, 2009, Petersen Events Center
Duquesne 72, No. 20 Pitt 63
Pitt Head Coach Agnus Berenato
Opening Statement...
“Compliments to Duquesne. They played a good game. The came to our house and got the win and that hurts. We are a work in progress and we need to get better. We need to figure out who has what role on this team. I want to congratulate Chelsea Cole on an amazing game. She had 21 total rebounds. Congratulations to her. But, obviously we are disappointed. Duquesne took advantage of every opportunity they were given.”
On relying on jump shots early in the first half...
“I guess I need to do a better job teaching. Maybe they don’t understand some of the concepts. We’ll have to do a better job at practice. Although each player settled for the jump shots they weren’t falling. But, I’m not out there and so it’s something I will address at practice.”
Is Pitt Big East ready...
“First we have to take care of Mount St. Mary’s, but we aren’t close to ready. Everyday we talk to the team about getting better. We need to know who we are and where we want to go. We need to find a leader. Someone needs to be on the court to step it up and have a real presence. We have yet to have someone consistently be a leader on the court. Maybe we are relying too much on the tradition before us with two Sweet Sixteens, but we have to realize that looking that good doesn’t come without really hard work.”
Shayla Scott
On defense...
“Just looking at the stats we won the second half because of defense. But we can’t wait that long to come out with that intensity on defense. It’s important to come out with it early and that will change the game. We can’t rely on jump shots, we have to play defense.”
Duquesne Head Coach Suzie McConnel-Serio
Opening Statement...
“The break that our players had was great for us and it put an extra bounce in our step. This was total preparation for us and we came out right from the beginning. Pitt’s a great team and our girls are familiar playing with them from summer leagues. Today our players bought into the game plan. They played great zone defense, we hit shots at key opportunities, we played today and I couldn’t be more proud of our effort against a great team.”
On playing a tougher non-conference schedule...
“The Atlantic-10 is a great conference to be in and our non-conference schedule is supposed to get us ready for our conference play. We played West Virginia a few weeks ago and we didn’t compete. It’s a big confidence boost for us for us to come in here and compete with a top program like Pitt. This was a total team effort. Hopefully we can go in and compete with Missouri and then we start our league play against Charlotte who won our league championship last year. This win shows we are battle tested and that we can play in our conference.”
Duquesne’s Alex Gensler
On today’s game...
“We stuck together on defense. When we hit a shot, we knew we had to get back on defense and we didn’t want to let Pitt back in the game. Growing up here, I used to come to Pitt games with my dad. It just feels great to come in here and beat them on their court.”
