No. 20 Pitt 57, Mount St. Mary’s 47
Pitt Head Coach Agnus Berenato
Opening Statement...
“It was really hard today on rotation with three players since Chelsea Cole and Sophronia Sallard were out of the line up. We tried to go small today since some of our taller players had foul trouble. We worked through it and you have to get those kinds of wins. Everybody is aiming at Pitt now and that’s a whole different ball game from last year. Even though we were successful last year we snuck up on people at the end and now Pitt is a team others aim to beat. I say it everyday, but we are a work in progress. I hope we’ll be ready for Big East tournament play and I hope that we peak at the right time. We aren’t there yet, but I was really happy today with the energy that we had. We started the game really well but we had too many unforced turnovers. They might be because we were playing a lot of different people in different spots and there were combinations of girls who have never played together in those spots before. We were able to get away with it and we learned about ourselves. Now we start Big East play and I think that is something everybody is excited about.”
On expectations of Pitt’s program...
“We have great expectations as a coaching staff and a team. We want a top program. We have been successful and the girls now need to step it up and keep that going. Everyone’s just struggling a little bit right now, but I know it’s going to all click. We have high expectations and we are hard on the team because of them. But any team can beat another on any given day. And we are going to beat a really good team. We are going to surprise them.”
On Big East play...
“I’m really excited about where we are going to be and what the other teams are going to be like. We are so proud to be in the Big East. We’ve had so much practice with non-conferences games I can’t wait to see what we are like in conference. We’re ready to make our mark.”
On coaching against her Alma Mater...
“No, I’m not sad we beat The Mount. I thought they did a really good job and came out fired up, I’m proud of them. My heart is a part of The Mount, but I don’t feel bad about winning.”
On Mount St. Mary’s Carrie Cooke scoring a career-high 24 points...
“Good for her. We knew she was scoring a lot and I’m happy for her.”
Shayla Scott
On the team’s progress...
“Once Big East play starts we can find out who we are and see where we are. Over the past four games we have been talking about defining ourselves and maybe we need a couple more games to do that. Once we figure who were are and how to have that momentum and energy we need to win and beat teams we’ll be able to take a deep breath."
On the approaching Big East schedule...
“We just need to settle down and turn over a new leaf. We need to step it up, we can’t wait any longer.”
