Murphy Claims Long Jump Championship on First Day

NEW YORK, N.Y. — The University of Pittsburgh track and field teams wrapped up action in the first day of the Big East Indoor Championships, held at the New Balance Track and Field Center at The Armory in New York City.
Louisville leads the race for the men’s championship with 51 points while Notre Dame follows close behind with 49 points. Cincinnati (32), Louisville (29), Notre Dame (28) and West Virginia (26) are all separated by just six points on the women’s side. The Pitt women currently stand in 10th place with 11 points.
Senior Janessa Murphy saved the best for last, leaping to the Big East long jump championship today with a season-best 6.29 meter mark. Murphy’s jump was also an NCAA provisional mark. Anita James also placed in the long jump for the Panthers, taking eighth with a mark of 5.67 meters, a season-best that qualified her for the upcoming ECAC meet.
Sarah Anderson placed ninth in the weight throw with a season-best 16.24 meter mark. Advancing to finals tomorrow in the 200 meter dash was Da’Lynn Mills, Mycaiah Clemons and Cambrya Jones. Jones will also run in the 60 meter dash while Clemons will defend her first place finish in the prelims of the 60 meter hurdles. Clemons 8.36 was an NCAA provisional time. In the 500 meter dash, Kari Hedderick ran 1:15.93, qualifying for the ECAC meet and advancing to the finals.
On the men’s side, Anthony Hobwana and Jermaine Lowery each advanced to finals in the 60 meter dash and 400 meter dash respectively. In the 5,000 meter run, Josh Christopher and Curtis Larimar went 13th and 14th respectively for Pitt while Nick Malenka placed 12th with a mark of 4.50 meters in the pole vault.
Action continues on the second and final day of the 2009 Big East Indoor Championships tomorrow at The Armory in New York.
