Clemons Gives Panthers Second Championship

NEW YORK, N.Y. — The University of Pittsburgh track and field teams wrapped up action at the 2009 Big East Indoor Championships today at the New Balance Track and Field Center at The Armory in New York City.
The men’s team totaled 15 points to finish 12th while the women’s team took eighth place with 46 points. Connecticut swept both the men’s and women’s titles for the second straight season, while Notre Dame finished second on the men’s side and Georgetown second on the women’s side.
Eric Jones’ fourth place finish in the triple jump led the Panther men on the day. His leap of 15.34 meters qualified him for the IC4A Championships March 7-8. Anthony Hobwana finished fifth in the 60 meter dash, running an IC4A qualifying 6.90. In the 400 meter dash, Jermaine Lowery ran 48.75, finishing seventh and qualifying for the IC4A Championships.
In the 3,000 meter run, Josh Christopher and Curtis Larimer finished 18th and 22nd respectively. The 4x800 and 4x400 meter relay teams both took eighth place on the day.
In the field events Garret Larkin and Dan Kwiatkowski took seventh and ninth respectively, with both qualifying for the IC4A Championships.
On the women’s side, Mycaiah Clemons was Pitt’s second champion of the weekend, taking the 60 meter hurdles with an NCAA provisional time of 8.36. Clemons bested her previous season-best time of 8.4 seconds at the Penn State Open back in mid-January.
In the 200 meter dash, three Panther women ran a season-best time and placed in the top seven, led by Cambrya Jones’ 24.11 ECAC qualifying time. Behind Jones, who finished third, was Da’Lynn Mills in fourth at 24.19 and Clemons in seventh at 24.54. Jones also placed seventh in the 60 meter dash, running a season-best 7.62, qualifying for the ECAC Championships. Mills finished 11th in the high jump with a mark of 1.65 meters.
In the triple jump, Wunmi Fapohunda led Pitt with a mark of 12.11 meters, taking third place. Anita James followed with an eight place finish while Janessa Murphy followed up her long jump championship with an 11.70 meter leap for ninth place.
Up next for Pitt will be the ECAC/IC4A Championships held in Boston, Mass., March 7-8.
