Quoting Coach Agnus Berenato
On Pitt’s season:
“I think it’s remarkable for these ladies to make history. It’s something that you can’t take away. For our team to go 12-4 in the best conference in the nation, that’s a compliment to our players and our staff. This season, I think it just showed us that it doesn’t matter what happens, someone is going to step up. This team plays with unbelievable chemistry and they really play for one another. Just look at our record. The numbers speak for themselves. With Xenia Stewart and Shavonte Zellous, we wanted to build a great program. Not just a great team, but a program. Both of these girls are up for national awards. These girls have been starters for four years and they helped us build our program.”
Quoting Senior Shavonte Zellous:
On playing at Pitt:
“It’s a blessing to play for Pitt for four years. All the hard work was worth it. I’m just glad I could be a part of this team. I would like to thank my team, they’re my sisters and I always have their backs. I’m going to miss it.”
On choosing Pitt:
“Coach Berenato and Coach Williams came down to Florida and watched my open gym and she asked me to come to Pitt and help rebuild their program. It was blind faith because I had to travel all the way from Florida to Pittsburgh. It just feels good to be a part of this history and to have the coaches believe in me, how I believed in them when I came here.
Quoting Senior Xenia Stewart:
On today’s game:
“We came out with a lot of energy. It was exciting. We went out and played together as a family. It’s just great for Shavonte Zellous and I to accomplish what we did. It’s a blessing. Although it is the end of our season, it’s not the end to our story. “
On choosing Pitt:
“There was a guy who was always in the stands at my AAU games and it was Jeff Williams. When I came for my official visit, we drove out of that tunnel and I saw the city and I was amazed. Then I was around the team and I knew I wanted to be a part of it. I wanted to help rebuild this program. I was getting letters from already established schools. That’s why I came to Pitt, to be a part of building our own story. Our freshman year was tough, but our hard work paid off.”
Quoting St. John’s Head Coach Kim Barnes Arico
Opening Statement:
“Pitt played great. They’re a very balanced team on both ends of the floor and they’re very tough to beat. I expect them to make a good run in the NCAA Tournament.”
On how Pitt matches up with Connecticut and Louisville:
“I think Pitt has the offensive firepower to compete with anyone. They have so many different players that can score in a lot of different ways. They also rebound the ball on the offensive end so well, that they make you get several stops on some trips down the floor. When you can score like that, you can beat anybody on any given night.”
