TAMPA, Fla.-The University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis team dropped a 4-0 match to top-seeded Notre Dame, this morning, on the second day of the Big East Championship held at the USF Tennis Courts. The Panthers slipped to 12-9 on the year.
Despite the loss, Pitt is guaranteed its highest-ever finish in the conference tournament, as the lowest the Panthers can finish now is eighth overall. Last season, Pitt finished ninth after dropping a first round match, but winning two in the consolation bracket. With today’s match, the Panthers move to the consolation bracket and will play No. 3 USF at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 18.
In today’s singles action, sophomore Adela Aprodu was the only Panther that wasn’t into her second set yet, as she kept it close with a 7-5 loss in the first frame. Well into her second set, sophomore Elizabeth Adams had also stole a few games from her opponent before the match was called.
The match began with a rare case this year, as Pitt dropped the doubles point. The pair of Adams and senior Kristy Borza fell 8-1 to the No. 2 ranked team in the nation of Kristy Frilling and Kelcey Tefft.
The Panthers and Bulls will meet for just the second time in program’s history, following a USF win in 1995-96. The Bulls entered the championship as the No. 3 seed, but were upset by No. 6 Louisville (4-1), this afternoon.
