MONROEVILLE—Playing in a familiar atmosphere, the University of Pittsburgh women’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to cross-town rival Duquesne on Wednesday, at the Club. The Panthers slipped to 10-5 on the year, while the Dukes improved to 7-11.
For only the second time this season, Pitt did not win the double point, being swept by Duquesne in three matches. The losses ended a seven-match win streak for the No. 3 team of senior Christie D’Achille and junior Shannon Benic.
It also halted the perfect spring record the no. 1 pair of senior Kristy Borza and sophomore Elizabeth Adams carried. Adams is just one doubles victory shy of setting the single-season record. She is one of four Panthers, including current teammates Borza and D’Achille, who have won 21 double matches in a season. The record was first set by Fran Davis during the 1997-98 season.
Adams is currently 21-5 in doubles, which is an .808 winning percentage, while Borza’s record of 20-3 is the best-ever winning percentage in a single season (870).
In singles action, Adams won her 17th match of the year with a two-set victory as the No. 2 player. Additionally, sophomore Adela Aprodu improved her singles record to 14-8 with a win in No. 5 singles.
This weekend, Pitt resumes Big East play with matches against Connecticut and Rutgers on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. The Panthers are 5-1 in league play.
