MORGANTOWN, W.Va.—Sophomore Jake Lucas set a WVU Natatorium Pool record in the 100 free, as the University of Pittsburgh men’s swimming and diving team dropped a close meet to Backyard Rival West Virginia, this afternoon, 154.5-145.5. The Panthers slipped to 2-3 on the season and 1-3 in the Big East after falling to the Mountaineers for just the second time in the last two decades.
"There were a lot of close races today- most of which went to the Mountaineers," Head Coach Chuck Knoles said.
"Although we lost the 'Backyard Brawl' to WVU, our sites are set on our next competition and beyond, as we prepare for the Conference Championships at Pitt in February," Knoles added.
Performers of the Meet were Lucas and junior Collin Forner. Lucas won the 100 free (45.12) and 100 fly (50.14), while Forner won both the 1M (305.78) and 3M (311.70) diving events.
Lucas eclipsed the previous record held by former Panther Mike Grube.
Freshman Adam Maczewski was another individual event winner, claiming a first-place finish in the 100 back (49.90).
The Panthers also claimed victories in the 200 medley (1:32.24) and 400 free (3:04.97) relay events. The 200 medley was made up of Maczewski, senior Jonathon Buchanan, sophomore Jake Lucas and junior Andrzej Dubiel. Later Lucas, sophomore Otto Pagel, senior Justin Corvin and Dubiel teamed up on the 400 free relay.
The Panthers face Maryland and Penn State in a two-day meet at Trees Pool, starting Friday, Jan. 15, at 4 p.m.
