Indianola, Pa.— The Pitt women's soccer team dropped a hard fought 1-0 loss at home against Georgetown, Friday.
Georgetown scored the only goal of the game in the first half and held the Pitt to one shot on goal as the Panthers were held scoreless for the sixth time this season. Pitt falls to 4-10-2 overall and 1-6-1 in Big East play.
The Hoyas, who improved to 12-4-0 and 6-2-0 in the Big East, provided solid defense and were aided by Kailey Blain's first goal of the season.
"Georgetown is a very good team and I thought they showed that out on the field tonight," Head Coach Sue-Moy Chin said after the game. "Our team stuck with them and played a strong second half, but it wasn't enough."
The lone goal of the game came in the 37th minute, when Blain took advantage of a Panthers turnover and fired a shot across her body and into the top left corner of the near side goal.
"It was a bit of an unlucky goal for us," Chin added. "They had a defender step on the ball and then we failed to clear it. Their girl had an off balance shot, but she put it in a perfect spot where Morie (Kephart) had no chance to stop it."
Georgetown continued to attack in the first period and didn't allow Pitt to register a shot in the first 45 minutes of play, outshooting the Panthers 6-0.
The Panthers came out strong in the second half, stepping up the offensive attack and controlling the ball in the Georgetown zone.
Pitt forward Hayley Neal fired the first shot on goal for the Panthers in the 51st minute, but Georgetown goalkeeper Jackie Desjardin caught the ball in the center of the box.
Neal's attempt was the only save that Desjardin would have to make, earning her sixth shutout of the season.
The Panthers did manage to outshoot the Hoyas nine to three in the second half, including four attempts by Liz Carroll who led the squad. Each team finished with nine shots and four corner kicks.
The Panthers will look to rebound on Sunday, when the team welcomes the Villanova Wildcats to Founders Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
